A tradition of coloured light
The Turkish mosaic lamp is one of the most loved objects to come out of Istanbul, and its story is older than any souvenir shop. Ottoman craftsmen learned to turn small pieces of coloured glass into light itself. They set the glass into shades that scattered warm colour across the walls of homes, bathhouses, and mosques.
What you make in the workshop belongs to that long line. The pattern is not decoration for its own sake. It is a language of geometry that Istanbul has spoken for centuries. For one afternoon, you get to speak it too.
Why the glass glows the way it does
A mosaic lamp does not simply hold a bulb. Each piece of glass is chosen for how it behaves once the lamp is lit. Amber warms a room. Cobalt cools it. Ruby sets it alight. Placed together in the right order, dozens of small colours become a single, living glow.
In the workshop you choose from more than forty-five colours, and the artisan shows you how they read against one another. That is the difference between a lamp that merely works and a lamp that people stop and look at.
Made by your hands, not watched
This is the part that surprises people most. You are not shown a finished lamp and sent home with a boxed kit. You build the real thing, piece by piece, on a glass sphere, guided at every step by an artisan who has made thousands of them.
No experience is needed, and none is expected. Complete beginners finish lamps they are genuinely proud of, because the craft is patient and the guidance is close. By the end of the session your lamp is fitted to its brass base, lit for the first time, and wrapped for the journey home.

How the afternoon unfolds.

Arrival and welcome
You arrive to Turkish coffee, tea, and warm cookies. The artisan settles the group, shows you the tools, and lays out trays of coloured glass. Nothing is rushed. There is no pressure to be good at anything yet.
- 02Next 15 minutes
The story of the lamp
Next comes a short, vivid talk about where these lamps come from and why their colours matter. This is the part that turns a craft into a memory. Afterwards, you look at the finished lamps around the room in a new way.
- 03About 30 minutes
Choosing your colours
Now the fun begins. You pick from more than forty-five colours of glass and beads, and the artisan helps you read the classic geometry so your pattern holds together. This is where the lamp starts to become yours. It is also where most people relax and lose track of time.
- 04The heart of the session
Setting the glass
This is the heart of the session. Working on a glass sphere, you place each piece of glass and each bead into your pattern by hand. The work is calm and absorbing. Coffee stays at your elbow, the artisan checks in often, and you never feel stuck.
- 05Last 20 minutes
Light, wrap, and carry home
Finally, your shade is fitted to a brass base and lit for the first time. You watch your own colours come alive. The team then wraps the lamp in protective packaging made for travel, and you carry it home the same evening.
